This cap has an embroidered FALKLANDS 1982 logo along with a depiction of HMS Glamorgan, a County Class destroyer that took part in the war. Glamorgan was part of the Taskforce from the start and served as the flagship for Admiral Sandy Woodward on the journey South, then became very busy using her twin 4.5" gun turret to bombard enemy positions (she was originally built with two such turrets, the B turret having been replaced with an Exocet launcher in 1974). Ironically she came under attack from Argentine Exocets on three occasions - the first two times they missed. On June 12th 1982, however, her luck ran out and an Exocet fired from an improvised launcher ashore was spotted by lookouts. Turning away from the missile, Glamorgan was hit in her helicopter hangar, destroying her Wessex helo and starting severe fires in the hangar and the galley below. 13 crew were killed and 14 wounded but the fires were put out and the ship underway again around 3 hours later.
She was decommissioned and sold to the Chilean Navy in 1986, becoming the Almirante Latorre. She served until late 1998. In late 2005, while under tow to a scrapyard, she sank.
Two versions of this cap are available - the Falklands version has the Falkland Islands and 'FALKLANDS 1982' logo at top left, the 'standard' version does not have the Falklands logo and moves the ship's name to this position instead.
All profits from the sale of this cap and the other items in our Falklands 25 range go towards the running costs of the
HMS Coventry website, which acts as a memorial to the crew lost in 1982, and a virtual meeting place for ex-crew members.
This Beechfield cap is 100% cotton drill (Azo-free) and has a velcro adjusting strap - one size fits all.
